Botany for Kids - Watch Root Systems Develop

Gardening Roots

Here's an activity you can do while starting seeds for the garden. While you're waiting for seeds to sprout, wouldn't you love to be able to peek under the soil and see what's going on?

Last year, we filled a clear plastic cup with vermiculite (soil-less growing medium) and planted a couple of each type of seed around the rim of the cup. Through the clear plastic, we could actually observe the seeds germinating and sending down roots, long before anything emerged above the soil. That gave us a pretty good idea what was going on in our other seed-starting containers, and also a nice demonstration about how seeds become plants.
