Another Big Learning Tip Sheet for Parents and Teachers...

Measuring and Fractions

Craft projects offer lots of great opportunities for helping your child learn about fractions. When a project tells your child to measure one and a quarter inches, don't miss the chance for a quick lesson with big payoff at school.

  • A tape measure is just a number line you can hold in your hands. When kids learn fractions on a tape measure or ruler, they are learning a more sophisticated and powerful conception of fractions than the piece-of-a-pie model gives them. One half is more than just half of a pie, it's a number that is greater than zero and less than one.
  • Show your kids which lines divide an inch into four parts (for quarter inches). Ask them to count the parts out loud.
  • Teach them to measure exactly on the line.
